Midland USA is leading the way with GMRS radio communication in the overlanding community. HiVis Expeditions uses these radios to communicate between vehicles, when out of the vehicle scouting an area or doing recoveries. The ability to have a clean and audible conversation between driver and spotter is made simple with the use of the GTX1000 handheld pictured below. Inside the vehicles we use hard mounted MXT400 units. 6db antenna and 40 watts of power are more than enough to carry great distances during a convoy. This radio is the most powerful GMRS radio made by Midland. The MXT400 is just as useful mounted inside farm equipment as it is offload vehicles. The radio utilizes 15 GMRS channels and 8 high powered repeater channels. A GMRS license is needed for the high power channels. The license can be easily acquired from the FCC for a fee of $70 and is valid for 10 years. or

1. Decide on radio placement. Mine is in the passenger footwell along the gear shift area. 2 self tapping mounting screws and she’s all set. The bracket adjusts for tilt.

2. Antenna location / mount / cable - I’m using the MXTA11 6db gain antenna with a stainless steel hood mount from AccessoriesUnlimited model: AUJ1 and a 13’ NMO style antenna cable (you could get by with 10’). A single 10mm bolt and the mount is attached, route the wire thru the driver side firewall plug towards the radio and under the center dash area. Attach it to the radio.

3. You’ll want to lengthen the power wire on the radio harness about 24” to allow for adequate routing and zip-ties. My power wire is routed from the radio, under the center dash, to the driver side firewall plug and across to the battery. It is fused shortly before the battery and again at the radio. The ground wire is a short run from the radio, behind the glovebox over to the passenger side footwell established ground.

4. Power it up and make sure everything is working. Enjoy your new radio!
